- Rewrite negative exponents: a⁻ˣ = 1/aˣ and a^(c−x) = aᶜ/aˣ
- Substitute y = aˣ, then multiply through by y to clear the 1/y fraction
- Back-substitute via matching bases, or via ln when answers aren't whole numbers
- Reject negative y values; use the −b formula when factorising is tough
